The 200th Post!

Scott's List of Overrated Artists:

Blink 182 - Saw these guys on Jay Leno. Sang harmony like a pack of howling dogs.

James Blunt - Your voice sounds like Adam Levine of Maroon 5. You're not beautiful and I hate that song.

Mariah Carey - Can her boobs get any bigger and her songs any more boring?

50 Cent - I dont care how many times you have been shot. A video game and a movie? How about action figures to make it complete?

The Offspring - Old stuff is awesome. Pretty Fly For a White Guy? A novelty song for the musically illiterate.

Creed - hey Scotty Stapp...you sound like a constipated linebacker.

Nickleback - O MY GOSH.

Staind - see above

All Boy Bands - Absolutely no explanation needed.

Sublime - What type of music is this? Sounds White Trash to me...

Kid Rock - see above

American Idols - I agree with Jake...you wouldn't need a show if you were THAT good

Enrique Iglesias - Yeah you're from Spain...that's cool...and...that's it

Yanni - the dude can't even read music

Bob Dylan - You can't dispute his influence...but who actually listens to this stuff? All Along the Watchtower was covered by U2...and...it was better than the original.

Johnny Cash - Again...the legend status. But from another generation. I have it on my iPod...listen to it...enjoy it somewhat...but worth the heaps of acclaim...uhhhhhh...

Erasure - LOVE THE NIGHTBIRD ALBUM! LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT! But how did these guys stay around for so long? I just don't get the older stuff. I am just glad they stayed around so they could write the Nightbird album. Their new acoustic album? Yuk.

And Windy's most UNDERrated band of all time?

Tears For Fears. Roland Orzabal has the best voice in Rock and Roll...I think. his range is immense...and the clarity in his voice is unmatched. I read that Tears for Fears were as big or bigger than U2 back in the 80's. Internal strife cost them their status in later years. Only recently did Curt Smith join back up for the latest album. Elemental (1993) is one of my favorite albums of all time.

I agree with almost everything. But Bob Dylan? There are songs that people sing today that most people dont even know he originally wrote. Obviously the guy had some influence.

I'm sorry Windy but I have to agree with Mr. Numchukah. Dylan has, and had immense influence in rock and roll. It wasn't his voice that made him famous but the things that he wrote. My all-time favorite song of Jimi Hendrix is Along the Watchtower, originally written and performed by Bob Dylan.
Sublime sounds White Trash? Obviously not given much of a listen there.
Johnny Cash as well on the list. Are you trying to insight a riot? While he was not as great a singer as most. The man single handedly put Rock-a-Billy on the map. Legend, yes. Influential, yes. Overrated, not a chance in hell. So I respectfully disagree with that one.
Other than that, yep pretty much hit it on the head. Funny cause you listen to most of it, Cpt. Erasure. Ha ha ha
Nice post to get things moving.

Johnny Cash is good but how many people think cash is the man but they hate other country that sounds the same.

I agree. I agree. I like Cash, I still like some of the older country. I grew up with a lot of that, because of my dad.
I however can't stand these new country singers, I group them with a lot of the pop music that can't write descent songs to save their careers. So instead they just turn good songs into lumps of shat! That's what erks me.
I do agree with that though, and am open minded about a lot of the music from all genres. I can't say I like it all, but I try.

Most of the country pop stars now are stealing good, old, rock songs and turning them south. I sucks when you hear a good rock song with a twanging guitar! NOOOOOOO!

I can agree with almost everything you've said Scotty. I know Dylan had influence, but I don't ever listen to his stuff. It just doesn't appeal to me.
Sublime-I listen to "Rivers of Babylon" because it has so much soul, but he didn't write that. I fell out of the rest of Sublime in Hike School.
I've been railing about the Johnny Cash thing for awhile now. If people, and punks especially, think he's such a legend and his music is SO great, than why don't all the punks own any Merle Haggard or Hank Williams? It's cuz it's fashionable to like Johnny Cash. I love "Ring of Fire" and "Boy Named Sue." That's about it. Maybe I'll like it later.
Everything else you said was pretty dead on with me.

C'mon... Sublime, what will we listen to on lazy summer days, or on the boat? Who cares what he's sayin or what kind of white trash he is, its perfect chill music. I agree w/ most of the rest there but would argue for sublime for this reason.

Windy, I love you and your opinion!

I will just say that, but the thing that gets me is the fact that you in your comment said that Mr. Cash is monotone. Then proceed to name one of the greatest monotone bands of all time, as your favorite, The Doors. I love the Doors, but if you wanna talk monotone.

One thing else, if you want to borrow my album of Sublimes, 40oz. to Freedom, I will let you. I guess that makes most of us "whitetrash" for listening.

I respect what you have said, I don't necessarily agree with it, but respect it as your opinion. Thanks for the post and the discussion. The fact that remains the same is that we all like what we like, and no amount of discussion is going to change that. Let's just take our differing music tastes and move on. Ha ha ha, like that will ever happen. Kudos to all!

Ok, I have to chime in on the Johnny Cash issue. I have been listening to alot of Johnny Cash lately. I don't really like "Ring of Fire", and "Boy Named Sue" gets tiresome.

As far as his relationship to punk and anti-authority types: Cash went into San Quentin prison and sang a song called "San Quentin" that has lyrics like "San Quentin, may you rot and burn in hell". After the song, he has the audacity to ask the guards for a drink ... and then sings the song over!

His relationship to Country is a different story. I'm not a fan of twangy music. Not much of his music is twangy. I do have Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings albums (although I haven't listened to them as much as Cash).

Also, the American Recordings are awesome.

I agree with Tears for Fears.

Mariah Carey I don't care for, but she's sold enough records that she deserves any praise she gets IMHO.

Poor Sublime. Everyone equates them with the stoners that listened to them in high school. In five years I'm going to pull out 40 Oz. to Freedom and LOVE IT!

And I hate all the wannabe Tool bands as well.

Jim Morrison did cool things like pee off the stage.

I agree with all of those but not Sublime.. I too (thanks to Chizzle) love the 40oz to Freedom, and Erasures old stuff.. priceless to me. Enrique gay sounding.. but sexy. I dont love Johnny Cash, but havent really cared.

And Trish.. Jack Johnson can sing me lullabies any time.. I love his music and everything he is. And same goes for John Mayer who else can treasure a woman like he can. But maybe that is why we love him because we wish someone would sing and feel that way about us!

Mariah Carey is white trash fat butt, but she can wail.

And as for American Idol.. NO I DID NOT VOTE FOR KATHERINE MCPHEE LAST NIGHT.

Ok, people this is a great struggle. I like it.

Here is the thing that most of you may have missed. I never said that Jim Morrison sucked or that I hated him in any way. I actually am a huge fan of the Doors. If you will remember Windy that I helped you find a lot of the classic rock, Bridge as well. Long afternoons in your basement Listening to CCR, The Doors, Steppenwolf, etc. I think that Jim Morrison was an amazing song writer, and singer. I also think that Johnny Cash was the same. Two different genres, but equally as important to the history of Rock-n-Roll.

As for Numchuks Jimmy pee'd on the crowd, Johnny flipped the record execs off at American for not producing his live album. Equally in your face tactics.

Good argument, not going anywhere, but great. Let's just say that we all have differing tastes and can argue them very well. Not going to change my mind, but it's good to know we all care about our music.

Windy, on a lighter note. I'm proud of you for being a straight man and listening for most of the stuff you claim. That shows your strength. A lesser man would have had his gentals removed and changed his name to Sally. Ha ha ha, nothing but love Winds!

About the Johnny Cash finger thing:

"Despite being virtually ignored by country music radio and the Nashville establishment, Unchained received a Grammy for Best Country Album. Cash and Rubin bought a full-page ad in Billboard magazine sarcastically thanking the country music industry for its continued support, accompanied by a picture of Cash displaying his middle finger."

Cash was flipping off THE ENTIRE COUNTRY COMMUNITY. That is funny stuff.

A good program is "Controversy:Cash vs. Country Row" on CMT. It talks about how Country Music abandoned Johnny Cash (RCA kicked him off the label) so he went and won grammys with Rick Ruben (who produces Slayer, Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jay-Z).

Incidentally, Rick Ruben just did a similar album for Niel Diamond. I hear the album is quite good.
