Why Women Earn Less????

This really doesn't have much factual info but its just my observations. Not meant to piss any one off but I'm sure it will get some conversation going.

Why I think women earn less
-Women don't put their career first(this isn't a bad thing) but a woman is much more likely to leave early, show up late, or call in sick to attend to her kids. Women are much less willing to relocate for a career.
-Men usually put in longer hours and work harder. They take the harder jobs and also the harder training to get those jobs. There might me more women in college but they are getting degrees in History, Anthroplogie, and French Literature while men try fields like Engineering, Business, and Technological fields.
-Women still submit themselves and expect things from men. Example-If a man and woman go out to eat, or just get a drink, many women will expect the man to pay,get the door, carry things. My point is a woman who doesn't expect to pull their weight shouldn't expect to get the same pay.
-Finally I'm not saying this to be rude but Women cause drama, thay cause problems in the workplace and play little get even, be rude, show others up type of games.

Discuss and feel free to rip into my idea(not me)

I dont think managers purposely think, oh it's a woman since she will create drama I will pay her 5K less a year, and since if I ever take her out to lunch she will expect me to pay thats another 2K a year.

I think that women can be less intimidating than men and also some of them don't expect as much as men(maybe when it comes to confidence when they are sitting in front of a male). Therefore being hired if they aren't as intimidating as a man they may be offered less.

But in my observations, I think that the more high paying, more education jobs are occupied by men, like doctors, lawyers.. jobs that it take long term education and long term experience to acquire. Because women see a window to go to school and a window to work. Men see it as limitless therefore they chose these more long term things which in return make more money. But if women put in the time they make as much as men.

I dont thing its because they create drama or expect men to pay for thier meals. And I don't think ALL women create drama and ALL women expect women to pay for thier meals. I create drama... but I have never EXPECTED any male to pay for my meal unless he asked me out.

I love you, Jake.

I also think that women change jobs more.

I am not saying that anyone intentionally pays a woman less but when you look at the big picture of how good of a worker you are those things subconciously have an effect.
I think that a man and woman who work the same hours, with equal education, and equal time at the workplace will make the same.

Men do see it as limitless but men also see the burden of providing for a family over a long time. Who do you think goes to school and work everyday trying to build a future to provide for the prosperity and well-being of his family? More men or women? If a man fails at this there is no option. If a women fails there is a crutch....a man.
Now all the women who will read this I don't think that will apply. The women on this blog are independent and strong but I am just saying the above remarks in a generality.

Maybe women are paid less because they are worth less?

Just a theory.....

Ha ha.. But really I think that a lot of women get paid less because it isnt thier priority. That is me and Trish. We get compensated in flexibility.

I think that its hard for women because we want children. But that said if we do want children we have to carry them.. and deliver them and that said we have to plan our lives, school and work around that. And employers know that so we get paid accordingly. Fair? But I also think if men feel it's a burden to support a family and provide for one, he shouldn't have one. But that is off the subject.

I dont think women fit into that.. but that is just my observation from work. Sure there are some that do fit into those catogories. Like the receptionist who is dumb as bricks but got that job due to her looks. But most of the women here I dont see in those catogories. Maybe it's cause they are unmarried drafters?

I think as Trish said it's all about priorities. And you get paid for your priorities. Men have one: to provide for thier family or gain wealth. Women have others: to have a good career and that is all, to be a mother, to be a mother and work because she cant afford not to, and to be a mother and get out of the house.

Off the subject....
I also think when faced with the choice most men prefer working. Most men would rather work than stay home with thier kids so thier wives can provide. Thier would rather be the bread winners.

And a lot of women would rather stay home

Lets say I own a company. Wouldn't I rather pay someone more if they work longer hours, dont leave early, dont take a lot of sick days??? And why would I want to pay someone more if they are going to leave in a year to have a baby?

Women earn less because that is what "society" dictates. Women have always been viewed as the lesser sex. That is throughout human history. It's just that now, we see it and just think "Awe, to hell with it, that's just the way it is. There are more important issues at hand."
If you don't think they are viewed as less read the Bible. God created Eve to be an equal companion to Adam. Not so that Adam could dominate or control her actions, thoughts, and equality. The bible said so, and so let it be. The bible has been so corrupted by men that while the story is good and well meaning, it lost most of it's real intent.
As for men taking harder degrees that is just horse crap. My mom teaches at the university. Most of the girls on her dance squad are majoring in Psychology, engineering, biology, and so on. There was even one who was studying to become a Highschool shop teacher, a field dominated by the male species. A lot of girls do major in the weaker fields, but so do men.
We can only change the stereotypes ourselves. We can not think of each other as less or more, but as equals striving for the same goals. The prophet has advised us to follow that admonition, that the home be a place of equality and love.

As easy as it is to blame all the world's problems on "society",whatever that means, there are good reasons why women make less. As I already posted but look at the top 10 highest paying degrees.

Chemical Engineering
Electrical Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Computer Science
Accounting
Economics/Finance
Civil Engineering
Business Administration
Marketing
Liberal Arts
see here http://money.cnn.com/2006/02/13/pf/college/starting_salaries/index.htm

Those are mainly fields with more men

Chemical Engineering is 23% women
see here http://pubs.acs.org/hotartcl/cenear/990802/7731salary.html

Science and Engineering fields as a whole are only made up of 22% women
see here http://www.nsf.gov/statistics/nsf99338/access/c5/c5s2.htm

If you don't believe that walk into any engineering firm count the number of men who work there and then go to an elementary school and count the number of women who work there.

It's not a "stereotype". Men don't just go out there and say HAHAHA were gonna paying women less. And no one said men and women aren't equal. There are legitimate reasons why women make less. As I said before I doubt you will find a man and a woman with equal education and equal time in the same job at the same place who do not make the same.

I have to admit - a dancer that is majoring in psychology, engineering, and biology would be quite attractive.

In the time that I spent around college girls, I would guess that 75-85% of the girls I knew were majoring in elementary education, secondary education, english, nursing or liberal arts.

The ratio of girls to boys in my engineering classes was at least 20-1.

The ratio of american girls to boys was at least 100-1.

The ratio to american girls not majoring in math to boys was at least 500-1;

Ok so they are still outnumbered. Did you get the facts from say 10 years ago? Or maybe even 20 years? The rise in women in those fields is increasing very rapidly. It's just as much a womens working world as it is a mans. I'm not saying that the numbers are staggering, but more women are not opting for the barefoot and pregnant road anymore.

Thanks for the facts though. It seemed that most of what you were saying was hearsay.

The top 10 highest paying degrees was from 2006.
The other 2 were from 1999 I dont think that the percentage of women has gone up 25%(doubled) in 7 years.

I never said it was only a man's world. My only point is poeple hear "women make less than men" well then that is horrible. No women overall make less and there are legitamite reasons why. Of course women have a place in the working world. That was never the point.

I just don't see what the big deal is. I don't think women should be pushed down, but If everyone tells women "there needs to be more women in this area" and "women need more power in this" Isn't that a slap in the face to women? I think all women are smart enough to make their own decisions and they decide what they want to do because thats what they like, whats wrong with that? Men and women are different and have different strengths and weaknesses. Women will not become stronger by comparing themselves to men and competing with them. I think they will become stronger by using their strenghs: Love,Nurturing, Understanding, Compassion, many things that men dont have.

That is a very good point. We wouldn't have invaded Iraq because women would be shopping. I kid, I kid just lightening things up, but seriously that is a very good point.

I think that the way I percieved what you were saying was wrong Nummie. I thought that was the way that you were thinking. That the things YOU were saying were your very own thoughts about women. I think that I mistook that for you trying to get into the EMPLOYERS head. So no argument here, on that. I think the only thing we can do is set a higher standard for women than what the world percieves them to be.

Windsie I think that you are correct that we as men should try to attain those feminine traits. I for one need to be able to attain more patience with others. If only us men could have the thinking and the logic of a woman, yes there I said it. Women think very carefully through situations. It's a wonderful quality, but at the same time it allows them the opportunity for a revenge plot. So stay back you devil women! Oh crap they're already in my head!?!

Oh, and do any of us really want a woman that is majoring in French Lit?

Just a question in passing.
