Media in the Home

I read an interesting article today, its long so I wont post it, but I will paraphrase it.

Children who are exposed to any promiscuous media on television, on the internet (even pop ups) and lyrics in music are more likely to have sex at an earlier age. They learn that the sexual media is more of a super peer to look up to which encourages them to be more sexual and more sexuallly active . They may adopt these media norms as their own social norms. Teenager that have repeatative exposure in as simple as commercials in the media are 2.2 times more likely to be sexually active by the age of 14-16.

What does that tell us as parents? Should we be watching what we are watching and listening to? The more they hear it and see it the more likely they are to be sexually active so early, when is it early enough for them to see the tv or hear the music? I am very guilty of this. Should I be watching E! News or whatever with Piper in the room? Not only for the sake of her increased sexual activity but her body perception, if she watches her mom watching this what will that tell her? I can see why its a good idea to not have these medias in our homes. We may say we are watching good things on tv, but how many sexy commercials are there between the news... I know not having tv and internet is boring but who knows what a curious child or teenager will look into if they have the means.

Can any of us live without the television and internet in our homes? Can we really keep a close enough eye on what is being viewed when we arent looking?

That's why you just watch wholesome TV!

Such as:

Star Trek
Battlestar Galactica
The Office
Veronica Mars
Space Ghost C2C
Aqua Teen Hunger Force

I look to Amber's family and what they did to combat this. She was raised very differently than me, and they did a great job with this I believe. They simply set standards, and stuck to them. They had a rule of no PG-13 movies until you're 13 (sounds puritanish, but it's good). When it comes to TV, just set limits. Watch something you WANT to watch, not just because it's something to do. I want to watch sports, The Office, Lost, MXC, and the news. That's it.
I don't know how to deal with commercials though.
